Search Engine Tips

Have you have ever searched for a subject or product on the internet
by typing a few words into a "search engine?" If so, you may have
been overwhelmed to get a list of thousands--or millions--of possible
websites. Today we want to pass on a few tips for narrowing down your
search to a manageable size.

A search engine is a program that searches for words by simply
visiting sites and requesting documents from them. It then looks for
the specific words you have asked about.

The simplest way to get better results from a search engine is to add
more descriptive words. For example, a search for the word [cookie]
might turn up 4,200,000 results. This is not only daunting, but it
will include links to cookie dealers, cookie cutters, cookie recipes,
and cookie books. Adding [chocolate chip] and [recipes] produces
22,800 results, which narrows it down, but the results are still
misleading. The results include ALL pages with ANY of the terms.
Pages that contain ALL of the terms will turn up higher on the list,
and you WILL get many links for chocolate chip cookie recipes.
However, further down the list you find recipes for all sorts of
other food, and sites selling cookies and cook books. It can be a
real waste of time!

Here are some tips on how to use "operators" to narrow down your
search:

Plus (+) and Minus (-) Signs:
Add a Plus sign (+) in front of a word to mean that word MUST be
included. This phrase [chocolate chip cookie +recipes] reduces our
search to 22,600. Now we are dealing only with recipes, but they
might be chocolate chip muffin recipes or oatmeal cookie recipes.
The Minus sign (-) in front of a word means that word MUST be left
out. The phrase [-chocolate chip cookie +recipes -nuts -lowfat]
brings the search down to 12,800 because it gets rid of all links
refering to lowfat recipes including nuts.

Double Quotes ("_"):
Surround an important phrase with the Quote (") character to ensure
that the results will contain that exact phrase, and not the total of
each of its separate words. For instance: searching for ["chocolate
chip cookie recipes"] will find pages that have ONLY chocolate chip
cookie recipes, and our search is down to 1,650 entries. There are
still references to chocolate chip cookie recipe books and general
cookbooks with chocolate chip cookie recipes in them.

Wildcards (*):
In some search engines: Add the Asterisk (*) character to the end of
word roots to look for variations. In the previous example, [-nut*]
would exclude the word nut OR nut(s). Adding the wildcard to
[+recip*] includes one recipe or many recipes.

Combining Operators (+ - " *):
Combine the characters to further narrow the search. Expanding on the
recipe search above, a search for ["chocolate chip +cookie +recipe" -
nut* -oatmeal -lowfat] brings us down to 1,450 entries. This is still
a lot but is much more manageable than the 4.2 million references we
started with!
